CAPD Patient Management Program

Abstract
CAPD has been well accepted in Korea as well as in other part of the world as a maintenance therapy for endstage renal disease. CAPD allows more independence for the patients and therefore better chance for social rehabilitation. At Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, the training program is organized to include (1) assessment of patients¢¥ status, (2) management before and after catheter insertion, (3) education to master aseptic technique, (4) peritonitis protocol and (5) follow-up procedure.
The patient status is assessed by ohtainin!g detailed medical and socioeconomic history and by physical and laboratory findings. Before beginning CAPD, the patient must understand the principles, technology, advantages and disadvantages of CAPD.
The most important part of the program is to train patients for aseptic technique during bag exchanges. Daily shower and dressing with betadine around the- catheter exit-site are recommended to prevent peritonitis and pericatheter infection.
The patients are trained to detect and treat peritonitis at home. They are instructed to contact physicians or CAPD nurses if peritonitis does not respond to treatment in 2.3 days or for any other problems they may encounter during treatment at home.
The patients are seen at OPD and CAPD unit once a month. Transfer set is changed once every 2 months by CAPD nurses.
